Biological Engineering Leadership Award

The Institute of Biological Engineering recognizes Dr. James H. Dooley for his sustained contributions to biological engineering and his exceptional leadership in the Biological Engineering community.
Dr. Dooley has been instrumental in articulating and promoting the biological engineering discipline through long service to the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), including his tenure on its Executive Committee, where he led the formulation and establishment of program criteria for biological engineering, a significant step in establishing the discipline at educational institutions and thus providing a context for the profession itself. Today, nearly 50 educational programs use the biological engineering program criteria as the basis for ABET accreditation that bear the lasting marks of his efforts.
Dr. Dooley’s contributions to the biological engineering profession span industry, education, research and practice. He has been an influential leader for advancing biology-inspired engineering in several organizations, including serving as President of IBE and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ASABE). He is dedicated to advancing our understanding of core biological engineering principles, combining biological knowledge with engineering design to create innovative products, processes and equipment. He is a role model for the practice of biological engineering.
Brahm and Sudha Verma Lifetime Visionary Award

The Institute of Biological Engineering recognizes and celebrates the visionary and pioneering achievements of Prof. Linda G. Griffith in Biological Engineering education and research.
Prof. Griffith led in the establishment of educational programs in the discipline of Biological Engineering focused on engineering analysis, design and synthesis, and how to translate discoveries in life sciences for creating innovations to address a broad spectrum of society’s needs in medicine, agriculture, materials, energy and nutrition. Through her promotion of an integrated curriculum highlighted by developing leadership skills and team-based, interdisciplinary design problems in partnership with industry, Prof. Griffith continues to advance biological engineering education worldwide.
Prof. Griffith is also recognized for seminal scientific contributions in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. As a pioneer in investigating how biomaterials affect cell fate and function, Prof. Griffith’s studies have contributed to our understanding of natural biological processes in human health, and to our ability to develop treatments for many diseases. She remains passionate in her commitment to bring together disciplines to address needs in women’s health.
